Catching up

Don’t worry, for the five (don’t y’all come at once, now!) of you who visit me regularly, I’m still here. Just a little behind these days. The situation with my future ISP is becoming messy. Very, very messy.

Yikes! There’s another Lynsey out there somewhere. I saw her name — spelled just like mine (that’s why I’m all excited, silly) — on a Friday Metafilter post.

I finally made it to Chino Latino in Uptown. Very chic. Many beautiful people. Yummy delicacies. I shall someday return.

I also found my missing passport (audible sigh of relief) this morning. I can now fly off to Milan or Paris on a whim. Takers?

I attended a web design conference (which I wouldn’t really recommend … does anyone know of any really good conferences I can go to?) for the past two days. I knew I wanted my money back when presenter called the ubiquitous web-preferred typeface Verdana “Veranda.” Like the patio.

Only a day left to vote for your favorites.

Happy birthday, T.J.!

Happy birthday, T.J. (Yes! That’s it! No more April birthdays!)It must be spring … web designers are re-designing (just like I plan to do when inspiration strikes). Meg over at Megnut (listen to me — using her first name like I’ve met her or something!) has given her site a facelift: I like! And Christine over at maganda.org looks like she might be cooking up something soon. Can’t wait.

3:02 p.m. It’s so beauteous outside today. Makes me wanna kick off my shoes and do … nothing. :)

Easter weekend in North Dakota

Happiness today: watching my 85-year-old grandmother help wash my brother’s new car in the driveway. All this warm, sunny 80-degree midwestern weather has got me in the mood for a re-design. Something not so dark. I’m seeing orange. Suggestions?

For months now I have refused to blog anything about the Elian crisis. Now, things have gone too far. Last night my family went out to dinner at a restaurant called “Space Aliens,” which I accidentally called “Space Elians.” And then, I had to dream about the whole thing — that we’d picked up the boy in our Sea Ray on Lake Sakakawea. Too weird.

Found another new blog to add to my list of faves: harrumph.com.

Chino Latino

Chino Latino is destined to be my favorite Minneapolis restaurant (although I’ve yet to eat there). Last night, Teej and I did rush tickets for Fosse. Liquid … luscious, pouring, unadulterated liquid.

There are so many words that belong here today. But sometimes it’s just easier when I’m writing about nothing.

Happy birthday, Eric!

Happy birthday, Eric. (It’s a month of birthdays, let me tell you. More to come.)

Fast Company has redesigned (the front page, at least), to be more in tune with the look of their magazine. I think I like it better … the white space helps. Frankly, I’ve been disenchanted with FC lately. The issues are too fat. The stories all read the same. I can’t remember an article the second after I’ve finished it. Or is it just me?

Happy birthday, Mom!

Happy birthday, Mom.Great news! Despite that I am the only person I know that can have a wretched time in the Bahamas in January for a month, good things have come out of my time on San Salvador in 1996. A worm specimen I helped un-earth has proven to be “new to science” (whatever that means, but it sure sounds good — kind of like I helped discover a new species or something). For other thoroughly engaging discussions of lugworms and various swamp species, don’t hesitate to contact me. Delightful dinner conversation, indeed.

This afternoon in the Commons, someone placed a wooden stand with a disposable camera taped to it in the middle of the p.o.’s. “Take a picture,” it lured. What I wouldn’t give to see the results of this public photography project.

Cute baby picture; Riothero

I usually don’t do baby pics, but this one was just so darned cute I couldn’t resist. Thanks to Heather and Jim way out in Montana for sending it along.

I’ve been reading Riothero lately as part of my daily web log fix … and I’m wondering, does this kid (age 15) go to school? (Yeah, yeah, I’m just jealous because what was *I* doing at age 15? Page layout that involved hot wax.) For the longest time I thought his page was called “ree-o-theer-o” but with his most recent design, I now realize the error of my ways.

4:30 p.m. Having a terribly hard time concentrating this Monday afternoon. Experimenting with the beta version of Deepleap. Has potential. But I wonder if I’m not using it wrong.

Misc.

I’ve heard from more than one person now that the light green link color on this site is a bit hard to distinguish from non-linked text. So, from this point forward, I declare all links a new color! (Gotcha! That really wasn’t a link, but you tried it, didn’t you?) Anyway, do let me know if it’s better now. (Sorry, I’m not doin’ the archives.

Saw Keeping the Faith on Friday night. I do like Edward Norton in the cute, sensitive blond role much better than the evil killer role. But I also came to the realization that this movie, like many of the other big-studio movies I so often enjoy, left me satisfied for only a few hours … and then what? Not that I’m trying to be all snooty and say that I only go for movies that premiere at the Lagoon or Uptown — but those are the films I’m enjoying more lately, and often left remembering longer.

In case you’ve been following the domain name/web hosting saga, I’ve purchased another domain name (it’s not as if I didn’t like the first one I got — I just thought I should have another) and finally found a hosting service. Check back in, oh, a few days to see if I actually can figure all this crap out.

Wow, Darin. Imitation is the finest form of flattery. Keep up the good work on your site. And keep web logging.

Happy where I am

There are so many benefits to working and living where I do. The sidewalk chalk that greets me when I leave my apartment each morning. Taking a French class (or any class I want, for that matter) — for free. The amazing speakers that have been here for the past two days: former major league umpire Dave Pallone and memoirist Patricia Hampl. Being surrounded by people with like minds and ideas. The fact that I have T1 line for my apartment and don’t pay any rent is pretty darn cool, too. I’m just feeling happy about where I am right now.

And someone else who is pretty happy where he is right now is my friend Jason. His love of National Public Radio has led him to a kick-ass job at WBEZ in Chicago — and a six minute segment on NPR’s Morning Edition about the Dead Sea Scrolls. Way to go, Jason!

The price of a domain name

From a conversation in my office this afternoon: “Yahoo are people, too. They just have, like, a whole lot more computers.”Looking to buy a domain name? On the auction block:

$1,500,000 Ad.com
$800,000 Pretty.com
$950,000 Trades.com
$6,000,000 Broadband.com
$6,000,000 In.com

I’m so glad mine only cost $35.
