Why Norway?

I don't speak Norwegian. I have no Norwegian ancestry. I only knew what lutefisk was thanks to dinner in the Kings' Room before the St. Olaf Christmas Festival. So, why did I spend a week in Norway in late May to early June of 1999?

  1. Cheap tickets. Ever pay attention to Northwest Airlines CyberSavers? Well, a friend and I received email notice of fairly inexpensive round-trip tickets to Norway. On the spur of the moment, we whipped out our credit cards and before we knew it, were flying to Norway May 27.

  2. I work at a college of Norwegian heritage and know nothing about it, other than we're named after a guy who killed lots of people trying to convert them to Christianity. (However, St. Olaf College did NOT pick up the tab.)

  3. Vacation! What better time to take a vacation than after the busiest time of the year for me? We barely had time to rest from alumni weekend and Commencement activities before we were on the plane.
So, on May 27, my friend Eric and I boarded a plane to one of the most beautiful countries in the world. After seeing the following photos, I think you'll agree.
